“Moving On and Settling Down” was a fully funded seminar on the topic of migration hosted by Volunteer Action for Peace and Othona Community from 16 to 21 October 2016.
This was an opportunity for UK residents to get involved in one of the areas that Volunteer Action for Peace is most committed to: understanding the experience of migration and improving education in this field.
“Volunteer Action for Peace (VAP) UK believes that we must be involved in the wider political and social context in which we work as volunteer organisations. For this reason we organised a seminar together with our oldest UK partner, the Othona Community, with the title “Moving On and Settling Down”. We invited refugees and asylum seekers to the seminar as well as representatives of organisations working to help them, such as Right to Remain, the Islamic Human Rights Commission and the founders of Refugee Action.
Participants came from Syria, Iraq, Burundi, Lebanon, Sierra Leone and India as well as the UK. A short film shot during the seminar includes interviews where some of the participants describe their situation. Besides the film, VAP has circulated a list of recommendations which would make the present bad system fairer and more human. – Nigel Watt MBE ”
